ASSASSINS CHICAGO HUMANITIES FESTIVAL 11/5-11/5/2012
Bold, original, surreal, disturbing, thought-provoking and alarmingly funny, ASSASSINS is perhaps the most controversial musical ever written. This most American of musicals lays bare the lives of nine individuals who assassinated or tried to assassinate the President of the United States, in a one-act historical "revusical" that explores the dark side of the American experience. From John Wilkes Booth to Lee Harvey Oswald, Stephen Sondheim
and John Weidman

ASSASSINS The Viaduct 10/10-11/10/2012
Billy Pacholski presents "Assassins," music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, book by John Weidman, at the Viaduct Theatre in Chicago, 3111 N. Western Ave. Oct. 10 - Nov. 10. "Assassins," directed by Pacholski, with music direction by Robert Ollis, begins previews Oct. 10; press opening is Oct. 12; the show runs through Nov. 10. For more information visit Assassins-Chicago.com.
"What better time to produce a musical about frustration with presidents than when we're trying to elect a new one? The 2012 election seems to acting as a catalyst for the animosity and unrest of the American psyche - by fueling negative commentary around our political system and the toll it is taking on the dreams and expectations of The Common man," says Pacholski. "This show is a perfect way to examine extremism in the history of our country, and the underlying angers, hopes, and beliefs of its citizens…in a fun and compelling way!"
Weaving together dream-like narratives of the assassinations and attempted assassinations of the U.S. presidents, Sondheim's Tony Award-winning musical comedy brings to light the pain of alienation, regret, and isolation that underlies each character's failure to achieve the American Dream. The New York Times hails "Assassins" as "an extraordinarily original piece of theater," and the LA Times says "Sondheim's killer musical comedy hits the mark…sidesplitting and sobering in equal measure, this is the most provocative musical in years."
"Billy has assembled a talented cast and design team comprised of some of the most exciting new theater talent in Chicago," says producer Jennifer Marling. "In addition to presenting an impactful and visually exciting production we believe that our performances of "Assassins" promise to raise the level of both social and political discourse in this highly charged election season. Billy's goal is to portray the real human stories of the people on which the musical is based while assuming a contemporary aesthetic sure to connect with savvy audiences. I'm thrilled to be lending my support to this production."
"For our production of 'Assassins' we've focused on the accurate history and personal stories of the characters. We put a year's worth of work into a dynamic website with a blog, and 'behind the scenes' videos of the cast and rehearsal process," says associate producer Kate Merena. "We'll also be presenting special opportunities, for audiences to expand on and participate in the social and political dialogue sparked by the show. We'll update our website with these opportunities in the coming weeks, so we encourage everyone to visit Assassins-Chicago.com 'early and often'."

THE MAIDS Illinois State University, College of Fine Arts, Centennial West 207 11/1-11/10/2012
directed by Vanessa Stalling
Sisters Claire and Solange are servants who attend the wishes of their despised "Madame" — then take turns playing her in their own sadomasochistic scenarios. First performed in Paris in 1947, The Maids provoked cries of outrage as it swerved from realism to melodrama — the maids plan a poisonous tea party for their mistress — to comic absurdity to madness. Over the course of his life Genet was a thief, prostitute, prisoner, poet, novelist, playwright, daring voice of homoeroticism and champion of the oppressed. In her review of a production of The Maids critic Rosie Dow wrote, "The colorful but troubled life of Jean Genet weeps out of every word of this play, and it's not the thing to go and see if your established theatre comfort zone is a few chuckles and a happy ending."

NOISES OFF Illinois State University, College of Fine Arts, Center for the Performing Arts 11/2-11/10/2012
directed by Christopher Dea
This 2001 update of Michael Frayn's farce provides a backstage look at the production of a silly English sex comedy called "Nothing On." In each of the play's three acts we see the staging of Act One of "Nothing On" – first during a flub-filled dress rehearsal, then six months later as the cast's romantic relationships (and nosebleeds) wreak havoc with a matinee performance, and finally toward the end of the show's run, when everybody is just ready to be done with it. Stuttering actors, missed cues, balky props (including platefuls of sardines), hidden whiskey bottles, a love triangle and a temperamental director – what else could go wrong?
November 2 – 3 & November 7 – 10, 7:30 p.m.
Matinee: November 4, 2:00 p.m.

BLOODY BLOODY Andrew Jackson BAILIWICK CHICAGO 10/4-11/11/2012
BLOODY BLOODY Andrew Jackson creators Michael Friedman and Alex Timbers cook up an alternate universe (and draw parallels to today's political/populist landscape) with their musical about the seventh U.S. president, reinvented as an "emo" rock star. BLOODY BLOODY Andrew Jackson tells the story of America's first political maverick. A.J. kicked British butt, shafted the Indians and smacked down the Spaniards all in the name of these United States--who cares if he didn't have permission? An exhilarating and white-knuckled look at one of our nation's founding rock stars, BLOODY BLOODY Andrew Jackson recreates and reinvents the life of "Old Hickory," from his humble beginnings on the Tennessee frontier to his days as Commander-in-Chief. It also asks the question, is wanting to have a beer with someone reason enough to elect him? What if he's really, really hot? This wildly entertaining 90-minute show is perfect for comedic actors and singers, with minimal dancing required. BLOODY BLOODY Andrew Jackson is an actor driven rather than design-dependent musical; it encourages breaking the fourth wall, audience participation, and rocking out!

PICASSO AT THE LAPIN AGILE Harper College Theater 11/9-11/18/2012
Winner of the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off Broadway Play, Picasso at the Lapin Agile takes place in 1904 at The Lapin Agile, a bohemian bistro, with an imagined meeting between a young Einstein and the young Picasso—both on the verge of greatness. Einstein is a year away from publishing his Theory of Relativity, and Picasso is three years away from painting "Les Demoiselles D'Avignon." Their very witty dialogue enables both the artist and the mathematician to realize that ideas and inspiration are close allies, as they debate which one will have the greater influence on the 20th century. The play, with its rich comic banter and hilarious monologues, is about attraction, creativity and ideas that both do and do not work. It deals with fascinating and profound themes, such as celebrity versus genius versus talent, but these heavyweight ideas are lightened with the clever and humorous dialogue.
