Villella was the first American male dancer to perform with the Royal Danish Ballet, and he is also the only American ever to be asked to dance an encore at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. He danced for President Kennedy's inauguration and for Presidents Johnson, Nixon and Ford. In 1975, Villella won an Emmy Award for his CBS television production of "Harlequinade." In 1997, President Clinton presented him with the National Medal of Arts, the highest and most prestigious cultural honor that can be bestowed upon an artist in the U.S. Villella currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the School of American Ballet, where he began dancing 64 years ago.
