High School in the Spotlight: Vernon Hills High

BroadwayWorld's Student Center High School Edition is back for another year! Just like the BWW College Center, the High School Center offers a directory featuring upcoming show listings for high schools nationwide. Schools can register for 'enhanced' listings on the site - adding in photos, cast lists, videos, links and more. Productions that take advantage of this will receive highlights on our listing pages, extra editorial mentions and potential spotlight features.

This week, we're excited to kick of the school year with a special nod to Vernon Hills High School in Illinois!

Vernon Hills High is a public high school located in Vernon Hills, north of Chicago, in Illinois. The school's Fine Arts department includes programs in art, music (band, choir and orchestral), dance, and theatre.

The music department offers a range of ensembles including symphonic bands, orchestras, choirs, jazz bands and jazz strings. Students routinely place in state competitions and the department's ensembles are widely acclaimed and recognized as top-ranking in the state.

Students involved in Theater Productions are often selected to participate in Illinois High School Theatre Festival (IHSTF) productions. Known as the largest and oldest non-competitive high school theater festival in the world. the IHSTF brings together over 4000 students, faculty and volunteers to put on over 25 high school productions and over 150 workshops in the span of 3 days.

The Backlight Theatre Company, the school's Theatre Production Group, produces three plays, one major musical and student-directed one act showcases per year. Launching the 2012-2013 production season is the fall musical INTO THE WOODS, playing October 26 thru November 3. The company next present Shakespeare's tragic tale ROMEO and JULIET as its winter play with performances on February 14-16, 2013. Other productions will be announced shortly.
