Though the lights on Broadway have been dark for the past
three days, the marquis for the Chicago's sister productions of such shows as Wicked,
Jersey Boys and The Phantom of the Opera are lit and theatres are open for
patrons. The IATSE Local One stagehand
strike may not, on the surface, seem to effect Chicago; which is controlled by IATSE Local 2. And yet, Chicago's
premier theatre ensemble company, Steppenwolf, is feeling the strike full force.
Steppenwolf's hit production of August: Osage County
has transferred to Broadway, with the Chicago cast in-tow. Now that the production is closed until there is a resolution, the Chicago cast and production
members are left wondering how long this strike will last and how to resolve
their living situations. Some of the
cast members have sublet their apartments and condos in Chicago, anticipating a long run on
Broadway.
